Bringing Home a New Maine Coon Kitten: Wren Isadora’s First Day

Queen Wren Isadora - A Velvet Claw

There are moments you’ve dreamed about for months, and then there are the moments that somehow turn out even better than you imagined. Bringing home Wren Isadora, our very first foundation queen for A Velvet Claw, was one of those unforgettable days. From the excitement of the drive to watching her finally curl up for her first nap, every moment reminded us why we started this journey in the first place.

The Drive to Meet Wren

The drive to pick up Wren felt much longer than it really was. I was incredibly excited, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous too. We had spent months preparing our home, researching everything we could, and imagining what this day would be like. Suddenly, it was actually happening. The moment we finally held her was surreal. She was every bit as beautiful as we had hoped.

On the drive home, Wren was understandably nervous. Leaving everything she’d ever known—her breeder, her littermates, and her familiar surroundings—was a huge change for such a little kitten. We talked softly to her throughout the ride, reassuring her that she was safe.

Mostly, though, we were just thrilled to finally have our hands on her.

Our adventure together had officially begun.

Her First Room

Before Wren ever came home, we had already prepared a dedicated quarantine room just for her.

Giving a new Maine Coon kitten their own quiet space helps reduce stress while allowing them to adjust at their own pace. It also protects both the new kitten and any resident cats while everyone remains healthy.

Her room included everything she could need:

  • Fresh food and water

  • Two food bowls

  • A clean litter box

  • Cozy beds

  • Plenty of brand-new toys

  • Several safe hiding spots where she could retreat if she felt overwhelmed

We also made sure to replace her fresh water every day and spend plenty of quiet time in the room with her so she could get used to our voices and presence without feeling pressured.

Her First Meal

Following our breeder’s advice, we offered Wren the same wet food she had already been eating. Keeping kittens on their familiar food during those first few weeks can make the transition much easier and helps avoid unnecessary stomach upset. She was definitely interested in dinner. She walked over, sniffed everything carefully, and happily ate a few bites before deciding she’d had enough.

That was completely normal.

Moving to a new home is exciting, but it can also be emotionally exhausting for a young kitten. It’s common for them to eat a little less during the first day while they settle in.

Her First Nap

After exploring her room, checking out her toys, and investigating every little corner, Wren was still a little unsure about everything around her. So instead of trying to encourage her to play, we simply sat on the floor with her while we ate our own dinner.

There wasn’t any pressure.

No expectations.

Just quiet company.

Eventually, she realized she was safe.

She relaxed, curled up, and drifted off into her very first nap in her new home.

Watching that tiny moment unfold was incredibly rewarding. It felt like the first time she truly trusted that this was where she belonged.

A Dream Finally Becoming Reality

It’s hard to put into words what this day meant to us. Wren isn’t just another kitten. She represents the beginning of everything we’ve been working toward. She is the very first foundation queen of A Velvet Claw, and the start of a dream we’ve spent months planning, preparing for, and building. There will be many more milestones ahead—cat shows, health testing, future kittens, and countless memories—but this first day will always hold a special place in our hearts. Today is another exciting milestone as well. Wren has her very first veterinary appointment, and we’re looking forward to making sure she gets off to the healthiest possible start in her new life. We can’t wait to share every step of her journey with you.
