Why Maine Coons Carry Toys Around the House
The adorable—and sometimes VERY loud—reason your Maine Coon has a favorite “baby”
You bought your Maine Coon 37 toys. They selected one. Now they carry it through the house while screaming like they’ve personally captured a wildebeest. 😂 If you live with a Maine Coon, you may have witnessed this strange little ritual. A favorite mouse, fuzzy ball, spring, stuffed animal—or some random object that was absolutely not purchased as a cat toy—gets picked up and proudly transported from room to room. Some Maine Coons quietly relocate their treasures. Others announce the journey with dramatic meows, chirps and trills so loud that you’d think something incredibly important was happening.
So… why do Maine Coons carry toys around the house?
There probably isn’t one single explanation. Instead, this adorable behavior can be connected to hunting instincts, play, intelligence, social interaction—and sometimes simply because your Maine Coon has decided that particular toy is very important.
Let’s talk about it. 🖤
1. It Starts With Natural Hunting Instincts 🐭
Even the most pampered house cat still carries instincts inherited from generations of hunters. In the wild, catching prey isn’t necessarily the end of the process. A cat may need to pick it up, carry it somewhere safer and decide what to do with it next.
A toy mouse obviously isn't real prey, but during play, your Maine Coon's brain can engage some of those same natural behaviors. They stalk it. They pounce. They grab it. And then…
Off they go with their prize. 😂 Carrying a toy may simply be another part of your cat's natural play-and-hunting sequence.
2. Some Maine Coons Become VERY Attached to One Toy ❤️
This is one of my favorite parts. You can provide an entire basket overflowing with toys, yet some Maine Coons repeatedly choose the same one. Again. And again. And again. That particular toy may be especially appealing because of its texture, size, smell, movement or the way it feels in their mouth.
Eventually, you may notice that it travels everywhere. Bedroom? Toy comes along. Living room? Bring the toy.
Middle of the hallway at 2:13 a.m.? Obviously the perfect place to leave it. Cats can develop strong preferences, and sometimes one inexpensive little toy becomes far more interesting than everything else you bought.
3. Why Do They MEOW While Carrying It? 📣😂
This is the part that tends to concern new owners. Your Maine Coon walks into another room carrying a toy and suddenly begins making the most dramatic noises imaginable. MROWWWW.
You run in expecting an emergency. Nope. Just Kevin and his stuffed mouse. 😂
Vocalizing while carrying an object can happen for several reasons. Your cat may be excited, seeking interaction, announcing their "catch," or trying to get you to participate. And because Maine Coons are already known for having an impressive collection of meows, chirps and trills, carrying a toy can turn into quite the performance.
If your cat appears relaxed and otherwise behaves normally, the vocalization accompanying their toy parade usually isn't something to panic about. Sometimes your Maine Coon simply has news. And apparently everyone in the house needs to hear it.
4. They May Be Bringing the Toy to YOU 🥹
Pay attention to where the toy ends up. Does your Maine Coon carry it into the room where you're sitting? Drop it beside you? Put it on your bed? Place it near your feet? That can be a clue that this isn't only about the toy. It may also be about you.
Your cat may have learned that bringing you a toy results in attention, conversation or play. You pick it up. You throw it. You wiggle it.
You say: "Ohhhh! Did you bring me your mouse?!" Congratulations.
You have just reinforced the entire operation. 😂 And honestly? We're okay with that.
5. Some Maine Coons Basically Teach Their Humans to Play Fetch 🎾
Maine Coons are intelligent, interactive cats, and some quickly learn the basic concept of retrieving toys. You throw something. They chase it. They pick it up. They bring it back. You throw it again.
Eventually you realize something important: You did not teach the cat to fetch.
The cat taught you to throw. 😂 Not every Maine Coon will play fetch, but for those who enjoy carrying objects, retrieving can become a favorite interactive game.
6. Carrying Things Gives Them Something to DO 🧠
Maine Coons aren't decorations. They're curious cats who benefit from opportunities to climb, investigate, chase, problem-solve and play. Picking up a toy and relocating it may seem insignificant to us, but it's another way your cat can interact with their environment. This is why enrichment matters.
Try offering different types of safe toys, such as:
Soft toys they can comfortably carry
Springs and balls for chasing
Wand toys for interactive hunting
Puzzle feeders
Tunnels and boxes
Toys with different textures and movements
Then watch what your Maine Coon chooses. You might spend $25 on the fanciest interactive toy available only to discover that your cat's greatest joy in life is… a crumpled piece of paper.
Cats keep us humble. 😂
7. Why Do They Move Their Toys to Weird Places? 👀
Here's another Maine Coon mystery. You find toys: Under your pillow. In your shoes. Beside the water bowl. On the stairs. In your laundry.
And occasionally in places that make you question how the toy even got there. Cats may move objects to areas where they feel comfortable, places associated with their people, or simply locations where they happened to stop carrying them.
There doesn't always need to be some elaborate meaning behind the destination. Sometimes your Maine Coon walked into the bathroom carrying a mouse and thought: Yep. This is where Mouse lives now.
8. What About Toys in the Food or Water Bowl? 💧
This one can be especially confusing. Some cats regularly drop toys near—or directly into—their food or water bowls.
There are several possible explanations, including carrying the object to a familiar or important area, "storing" it somewhere, or simply ending a play session near resources they frequently visit. We can't know exactly what every cat is thinking when they do it.
What we can know is that fishing a soaking-wet toy mouse out of the water fountain at 6 a.m. is a unique privilege of cat ownership. 😂
9. Could They Be Treating the Toy Like a Kitten? 🥹
People sometimes interpret carrying and vocalizing with a toy as a cat treating it like a "baby." It's an adorable thought—and certain behaviors can certainly look maternal. But we should be careful about assigning a human-style explanation to every instance of toy carrying. Depending on the cat and situation, the behavior could involve hunting, play, social communication, object preference or other instincts.
So while your Maine Coon may appear to be lovingly transporting their little stuffed baby around… We can't necessarily know that's what they think they're doing.
Although watching them tuck a stuffed mouse into bed certainly doesn't help our objectivity. 😂
10. Sometimes They're Simply Showing Off 😂
Picture this from your Maine Coon's perspective: They found the mouse. They stalked the mouse. They captured the mouse. And now the household needs to be informed of this extraordinary accomplishment. Immediately.
Could some toy-carrying behavior simply be excitement and an attempt to engage you? Absolutely.
And when your Maine Coon comes proudly marching into the room carrying a toy, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging their accomplishment. "WOW. You got it!"
Yes, we're applauding a cat for capturing a stuffed squirrel that hasn't moved since Tuesday. This is our life now. 🖤
Is Carrying Toys Around Normal?
In most cases, yes. Carrying, retrieving, relocating and vocalizing around toys can all be part of normal feline play and interaction. As always, what matters is knowing your individual cat's normal behavior. A sudden major behavioral change—especially when accompanied by unusual distress, confusion, appetite changes, pain, lethargy or other concerning symptoms—is worth discussing with your veterinarian.
But a happy, healthy Maine Coon proudly marching through the house with their favorite toy? You may simply have a tiny hunter with a very important delivery to make.

One day you'll look down and find that same battered little toy you've picked up from the floor a hundred times. It may be missing an ear. Its tail may be hanging by a thread. You may have purchased replacements that your Maine Coon completely rejected because apparently New Mouse is an imposter. But Old Mouse? That's their mouse.
And every time they proudly carry it into the room, they're giving you another glimpse into the wonderfully quirky personality that makes living with a Maine Coon so much fun. So let them hunt. Let them carry. Let them bring you their treasures.
And when your Maine Coon walks into your bedroom at 3 a.m. yelling through a mouthful of stuffed mouse… Please congratulate them. They worked very hard. 😂🖤🐾
