Our Daily Routine With Maine Coon Kittens

Life with Maine Coon kittens is never boring. They are curious, playful, affectionate, and somehow manage to turn even the simplest part of the day into an adventure. At A Velvet Claw, our daily routine isn't just about feeding and cleaning. It's about spending time with our cats, observing their behavior, providing enrichment, and making sure they feel safe, comfortable, and loved.

While every day can look a little different, here's a peek behind the scenes at what a typical day with our Maine Coon kittens looks like.

Morning Cuddles & Check-In

Our mornings usually begin with cuddles. Before jumping into the day's chores, we spend a little time with the kittens and see how everyone is doing. This gives us a chance to enjoy those quiet morning moments, but it also serves an important purpose.

We pay attention to things like:

  • Energy level

  • Appetite

  • Eyes and nose

  • Coat condition

  • Litter box habits

  • Overall behavior

When you spend time with your cats every day, you become familiar with what is normal for each individual. Sometimes a small change in behavior can be the first indication that something isn't quite right. And, of course, Maine Coons are very good at making sure the "cuddle" portion of the morning isn't skipped.

Breakfast & Fresh Water

After our morning check-in, it's time for breakfast. Growing Maine Coon kittens need appropriate nutrition to support their development. Maine Coons are a slow-maturing breed and can continue developing for several years, so good nutrition during kittenhood is especially important.

Fresh water is also checked and refreshed throughout the day. Mealtime gives us another opportunity to observe everyone. We want to see kittens interested in their food and behaving normally around meals.

Time to Clean

There may be a glamorous side to raising beautiful Maine Coons, but litter boxes definitely keep us humble! Cleaning is part of our routine every single day. Litter boxes are scooped and refreshed as needed, food and water areas are cleaned, bedding is checked, and the kittens' environment is kept tidy. Keeping their living spaces clean isn't just about appearances. Good sanitation is an important part of maintaining a healthy environment for cats and kittens.

Playtime & Enrichment

Then comes one of their favorite parts of the day: playtime. Maine Coons are intelligent, curious cats, and they need opportunities to use both their bodies and their minds. We rotate different types of enrichment, including interactive toys, feather toys, scratching surfaces, climbing areas, tunnels, and plenty of opportunities to explore. Playtime also allows us to watch personalities develop.

One kitten might immediately investigate something new, while another prefers to sit back and observe first. Some want to climb everything they see, while others would rather chase a toy across the floor. Those individual personalities are one of our favorite parts of watching kittens grow.

Socialization Is Part of Everyday Life

Socialization doesn't have to happen during a scheduled "socialization session." It happens throughout the day. Being held, hearing normal household sounds, interacting with people, experiencing different toys and surfaces, being brushed, having paws gently handled, and simply being part of everyday life can all help kittens become comfortable with the world around them.

Our goal is to raise kittens who aren't just beautiful Maine Coons, but confident and well-adjusted companions too.

Grooming & Handling

Those gorgeous Maine Coon coats require maintenance, so introducing grooming early is important. We incorporate gentle brushing and handling into our routine so these experiences become normal. We also spend time touching paws, looking at ears, and getting kittens accustomed to the types of handling they may experience later during grooming, nail trims, veterinary appointments, and eventually cat shows for those who participate.

Starting these habits while they're young can make a big difference as they grow into very large adults!

And Then… Nap Time

After eating, exploring, climbing, playing, and causing the appropriate amount of Maine Coon chaos, eventually the house gets quiet. Kittens sleep a lot because their bodies are busy growing and developing. We make sure they have comfortable, safe places where they can settle down and rest without being disturbed. And sometimes those naps give us just enough time to clean up everything they managed to rearrange during playtime!

Evening Routine

As the day winds down, we repeat many of the same little checks we made that morning. Dinner is served, water is refreshed, litter boxes are checked again, and everyone gets another round of attention. Evenings tend to be another opportunity for playtime and interaction before everyone settles down for the night. Of course, anyone who has ever lived with a Maine Coon knows that our definition of bedtime and their definition of bedtime aren't always the same.

More Than a Routine

Raising Maine Coon kittens is made up of hundreds of small moments. It's filling food bowls and scooping litter boxes. It's brushing coats and trimming nails. It's watching kittens learn to climb, discovering their favorite toys, noticing their personalities emerge, and stopping what you're doing because someone has decided they desperately need to be held. Those everyday moments are a huge part of why we love this breed.

At A Velvet Claw, our routine is ultimately about creating an environment where our cats and kittens can feel safe, loved, stimulated, and cared for while they grow. And tomorrow morning?

We'll start all over again with cuddles. ❤️

What does your cat insist on being part of every single day?
